Before Restoration
This is my project Nordic Jet Boat. It was built in 1977. Nordic boats is still in business today. This hull is pretty solid and has full stringers all the way from the transom up the the bulk-head in the front. I am building a 454 Chevy for it that came out of a 1970 Chevelle with an LS-6 Engine. It is an "HP" 4 bolt main block with forged crank and square port closed chamber heads.

October 2007 First run
Good day all in all. Have some adjustments and tweaking to do. The Max RPM are at 6000RPMs. That works out to about 600HP according the the RPM/HP Impeller Charts.

BIG BLOCK CHEVROLET BUILD UP

 

 

This is the HP 454 virgin block. I deburred the oil drain backs and also removed and smoothed the casting flash. Stay tuned for full build up soon. These are the 6.135 Eagle Forged H-beam rods that I will be using. They will be swung by a Chevy Factory Forged Crank, cross-drilled and nitrided.

 

The Tear Down of the Pump

Here in CT. There are not too many Jet Boats here so there are not any vendors for parts here. There is a lot of stuff in AZ and CA. I needed some required tools to work on a pump. So I made an impeller socket from a cheap NAPA socket. I cut the socket in half then machined each end square in the lathe. I then found some thick wall tubing with the same diameter and turned the ends on that as well to get the squareness and the lenght needed. I must say it works great.

 

 

Ah yes more tools I needed but was too cheap to buy them from CA. Jet Pump impellers have tight relationship with the shaft so a puller is needed. So I made everything you see here. Took some time with the welder, lathe and Bridgeport Milling machine. Oh and yes, some scratch drawings. No CAD files here. The impeller was hammered. Looks like it injested rocks. This impeller needs to be replaced. All in all the puller worked great. To get the new one back on that is a different story. I might have to fire up the grille and heat the alum. impeller up a little. I will cross that bridge when I get to it.

 

 

This is my "new" B cut impller I got at a swap meet in CT. I could not believe someone had one. I got it for 25.00. It looked great. It is acutally from a Dominator Pump. I need to get a different style wear ring for this impeller to fit for a Berkley impeller.

You can see the old impeller. Chewed up pretty good.

 

 

 

This is the suction section of the pump. I bought the sea-loc marine jet drive manual for this. This is the stainless steel impeller shaft. I am checking the run-out on it. The max run-out I have found it .001" That is pretty good for what I want to do. Polished it up and it is ready to go after the new bearing gets pressed on.

 

 

This is the oil "puke" tank I made out of 6061 aluminum tubing and plate. I also machined a fitting for the drain and TIG welded baffles on the inside of the inlet fittings. The breathers are Moroso. Puke Tank Fabrication Home machined thermostat housing I designed and machined out of a chunk of aluminum. I will not tell you how long it took me though.
